The concept of the Ablemouse, rose directly out of a retired physician’s desire to promote healthy computing using his expertise in computer software and computer usage.
The Ablemouse was developed by John Osborn, MD, founder and CEO of Westing Software, Inc. Dr. Osborn’s career was largely in medical research. He was involved with the development of heart-lung machines and medical instruments for cardiac intensive-care. Later, based on what he had learned, he started two very successful companies.
The first, Research Development Corporation, developed and manufactured computer-based medical instruments. The second, Jandel Scientific Inc., specialized in scientific software and developed the initial “Ablemouse” prototypes.
When Jandel Scientific was sold to a larger company, Dr. Osborn
saved out the rights to the Ablemouse development and after starting
Westing Software Inc. continued to engineer, test and refine the
design.
